In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is drafted to the orbiting Battle School at the age of six, where he must prove himself in increasingly brutal war games.
Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and begins to plan an invasion of Earth.
